Before settling in the United States, Dr. Hartmuth Bittner lived in Germany, where he served as a lieutenant with German Special Forces, completed studies through the National Academy of Sports Science and Sports Medicine in Cologne, and earned his MD magna cum laude from the University of Heidelberg. He began working in America as a Harvard Medical School visiting lecturer in the mid-1980s. Dr. Hartmuth Bittner split his time between the US and Germany over the next 15 years, serving in a range of teaching and research positions. He also secured a PhD from the University of Leipzig with the doctoral thesis “The effect of brain death on donor thoracic organ function.”
For the past eight years, Dr. Hartmuth Bittner has been centered in Florida, where he has directed heart/lung transplantation for Florida Hospital in Orlando and directed cardiovascular/thoracic surgery for the Largo Medical Center in Largo. He has served as president of the Gulf Coast Cardiothoracic Surgery Institute since founding this Tampa-based heart surgery practice in 2015.
