A resident of Tampa, Florida, Dr. Hartmuth Bittner is one of the leading heart surgeons in America and the founder of the Gulf Coast Cardiothoracic Surgery Institute. Board-certified in general, cardiac, and thoracic surgery, Dr. Hartmuth Bittner is skilled and experienced at performing a diverse range of procedures including repairing aortic aneurysms.

An aortic aneurysm is an irregular swelling that develops in the body’s main blood vessel, the aorta. This type of aneurysm typically occurs in the abdomen or the chest, although it can occur at any point along the vessel. Some aortic aneurysms remain small, although others can rapidly become larger causing problems such as pain in the chest or back and respiratory symptoms. An aneurysm can lead to additional problems including tears in the lining of the aorta, or it may rupture and cause potentially fatal internal bleeding.

The most common causes of aortic aneurysms include smoking, elevated blood pressure, arterial disease, and injury due to trauma. Genetics may also influence the development of the condition. Treatment for an aortic aneurysm typically involves strengthening the aorta in the section of it that is damaged by surgically placing an artificial tube in this area.

In September of 2017 Dr Bittner operated on me to repair a Standard Type A aortic dissection with an aneurysm dialation on the aortic arch of 7.5 mm. My condition was asymptomatic and discovered during a routine wellness check when my primary physician heard an unusual heart murmur. At 62 I had been in excellent health throughout my entire life and it was actually the first time I was ever even admitted to a hospital. Toward the last part of the surgery my right coronary artery unexpectedly burst and Dr Bittner's team quickly responded to this subsequent emergency. Simply put, he saved my life.

Although for several months I really struggled through recovery I am now in good overall health and able to resume most of previous activities. I'm very dilligent with my diet, excerise and monitoring my blood pressure, I see my cardiologist regularly for a condition called aortopothy but today I actually feel very good and consider myself a survivor.

There no words adequate enough to express my appreciation to Dr Bittner and all the health care professionals who treated me throughout this experience. So often I've heard how lucky I am, but during my recovery sometime in late 2018 I began to slowly understand that 'luck' has a name and that I was being called by a power that I had never known. This was truly a life changing event, I was saved and I give thanks to the love and grace of God every single morning. It is wonderful to be alive.
